  This is an excellent historical survey, looking at how fourteen Christian thinkers (from John Chrysostom to John R.W. Stott) have interpreted the Sermon on the Mount in their theology, poetry and preaching. My understanding of the ethics of Jesus has been enriched through this study and the different perspectives it contains. Of all the writers, Luther comes the closest to describing the complications and contraditions in trying to live by the Sermon on the Mount and live in the world as it is.
