Payne as a Culture of Poverty Theorist 
I have been reading "Bridges out of Poverty" for a social work class I am taking at The Ohio State University. I am a senior in psychology and sociology, and I find this book academically lacking and socially irresponsible. This text is classic culture of poverty--the theory that those in poverty are there because of character flaws and bad behavior. Wow what an enlightening read! I was having difficulty with my students and this book made sense of it. It gave me encouragement that I can do something to reach my students, but that it would not be easy. I have since passed it on to a few of my colleagues. It is too good to not share!
