  • LOVE NIN!
I absolutely love NIN and this is my favorite NIN album! When I was 16 I was forced on a loooooong road trip with my family and this one along with INXS Kick were the only two tapes(!) that I remembered to bring with me to listen to on my awesome yellow walkman(!). Needless to say, I learned every single word to every single song on both albums. I bought this CD twice and wore them both out...
Reznor's lyrics are haunting, terrifying, but almost obscenely beautiful at the same time. Each song reminds... more info

  • Techno metal at its worst. Try Static X or Orgy for good industrial!
Wow, words can't describe how terrible this debut was for NIN. Song's like 'Head like a hole' and 'Sin' are absolutely garbage! They try so hard to be techno and metal at the same time and it fails! Trent has no talent, and he doesn't write songs or play any instruments either! "Something I can Never have" is a a horrible ballad and the piano isn't even that good! Oh, and the video for 'Sin' has nude girls... which is very inappropriate!
Avoid stupid industrial bands like Ministry and Nine Inch Nails... more info

  • Exploration of Mainstream Music: Subject B: NIN: Album #1: Pretty Hate Machine: Thoughts: Neither like nor hate...
...after spending a week listening to four Slipknot albums to see what all the fuss was about their mainstream phenomena I realised that most of the time they were reliant on a heavy and repetitive formula at which they only managed to stand out when they were either technically or melodically sufficient...
...now as long as I've known most industrial music has had plenty of repetition to represent the dancey electronica side of them and combining this idea with industrial sounds and heavy and evil... more info

  • As meaningful a modern rock debut as anything else
Admittedly I am more a fan of the sound's NIN cultivated post-Broken, but it is near impossible to deny PHM's influence and simple solidness. Reznor delivers the undeniable pop-industrial masterwork via ten air-tight, thoughtfully produced tracks with no filler and a simple desire to merge innovation and catchiness with ease.
