Usui Shiki Ryoho (the Usui System of Natural Healing), known as Reiki, is a form of healing and spiritual awakening, received and developed 100 years ago in Japan by Mikao Usui, and brought to the West via Hawaii in 1937.
Five Spiritual Precepts of Reiki
Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show gratitude to every living thing.
The Five Spiritual Precepts of Reiki have been handed down from Mikao Usui as a part of the oral tradition of the Usui System.
The precepts remind us to be as conscious as possible, letting go of worry and anger, learning to honor and cultivate appreciation. The Usui System is not a religion. The precepts are there for practitioners of all religions to remind us of the same basic moral principles most of us learned as children:
"Treat others as you would want them to treat you."
They call upon us to return to the pure teachings of our own religious up bringing. They are a call for developing inner peace and a call for unity among diverse people. The precepts can unite us in peaceful brotherhood and sisterhood, first by calming our minds of worry and anger, then by treating others respectfully and cultivating appreciation for all our good fortune.
The precepts remind us that all of life is sacred. They make manifest the essence of Reiki in daily life and relationship.
Reiki Initiation
Reiki is passed on from one person to another through specific initiation rites, teachings and defined forms of practice. The Japanese word reiki can be translated as 'universal or spiritually guided life force' and the Usui System is a way of working with reiki for healing of self and others.
Healing
The word healing is used in the sense of regaining harmony and wholeness and Usui Shiki Ryoho addresses the whole person, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
The Way of Usui Shiki Ryoho
The integrated way of Usui Shiki Ryoho has four Aspects: healing practice, personal development, spiritual discipline and mystic order. For the gifts of the whole to be realised they need to be held in a balanced way, not allowing any to overshadow the others. The Aspects spring from a central core of practice and philosophy called the Form, comprised of nine Elements, each bringing unique lessons.
The Essence of Reiki
The combination of all the Elements and Aspects and their inter-relationships creates the system which has a proven, predictable capacity to take people along a profound path of healing, growth and spiritual deepening.
